Baptism of Fire

Many wondered if John the Baptist was the Christ, but John put an end to that speculation, saying, “I am not worthy to loosen the thongs of His sandals.” He also declared, “I baptize you with water… He will baptize you with Spirit and fire.” Fire is a force that demands respect. It has the power to destroy, but when used properly, it can bring about renewal and life.

I recently watched news coverage of the wildfires raging in California. These events showcase nature’s raw power and the devastating ways it can alter lives. Yet, even wildfires serve a purpose. They clear away dead vegetation, pests, and diseased trees, creating space for new growth to thrive.

Life often feels like this. Good times can come to an end abruptly, leaving us overwhelmed by waves of loss and suffering. I’ve seen people lose everything through divorce, the death of loved ones, or house fires that destroy all their possessions. The pain we endure during these moments can feel like fire consuming us. But just as fire refines gold and silver, our trials can refine and strengthen us.

When faced with life’s fires, we have a choice: let them destroy us or allow them to purify us. Too often, people give up, feeling life is no longer worth living, or fall into despair when the weight of their struggles becomes too heavy. But, just as the fires of purgatory purify our souls, the challenges we face in this life can also draw us closer to God and make us spiritually stronger.

Pain and suffering remind us of what truly matters. Our possessions, careers, reputations, and even our loved ones must come second to our relationship with God, our Father. Even if we lose everything and find ourselves alone, God will never leave us. No one and nothing can take Him away from us—only we can choose to walk away.

Choosing to follow Christ doesn’t make life easier; in many ways, it makes it harder. Picture Jesus as a fire that lights the path ahead. When we hold onto Him, His fire consumes us too, burning away the dead branches and impurities in our lives. But in the process, we become a light for others, spreading hope and love. Let’s hold fast to Jesus and to one another, allowing His flame to spread refining us and igniting a fire of love that spreads to all mankind.
