It’s nice to see good Christians in society. However, it’s not as nice to see people who act like they are better than others because of how talented, smart, or holy they are. Loving God and others is great, but it’s not great when someone uses his goodness, faith, or talents to lift himself over someone else. When we stand up tall and exalt ourselves, it just makes us an easier target to get knocked down and humbled.
The Son of God didn’t arrive as a powerful being throwing lightning bolts. He came as a helpless human being. Jesus didn’t brag about His power. He didn’t call attention to the miracles that He performed and often asked the person healed not to tell anyone. Jesus was humiliated and endured much suffering on the cross for sins He didn’t commit. Because of His humility, He was exalted above all.
If we profess to be followers of Jesus, we should try to mimic His virtue of humility. Instead of lifting ourselves up, try lifting up others. We live in a society full of competition and “one-upmanship,” but just imagine what the world would look like if everyone lifted up their neighbor. Let’s all reflect on Galatians 6:14 that says, “May we never boast, except in the Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
