“…He humbled Himself, becoming obedient to the point of death…” Think about that for a second – obedient to the point of death. I struggle being obedient to God even in small matters. God has a very possible mission for each of us if we choose to accept it.
What is God’s mission for us? In order to find out we need to perfect the art of spirituality listening. This comes by setting aside some time each day to pray and talk to God. The time we set aside should be free from distractions. Think about the paths and opportunities open to us in our lives. Then, consider if each of the paths will bring us closer to God, farther from God, or will have no impact on our relationship with Him. Our ultimate goal should be to grow as close to God as possible, so we should constantly review our options as we journey through life.
We need to be able to trust God with our lives. Jesus said to His Apostles, “When I sent you forth without a money bag or a sack or sandals, were you in need of anything?” They replied, “No, nothing.” Jesus is Human as well and struggles to accept His own fate by saying, “Father, if You are willing, take this cup away from me; still not my will but Yours be done.” We should each also react to the bad, tough, and uncertain times in our life by saying not my will but Yours be done. We all think we know what’s best for us, but God knows what’s best for us.
I’ve always loved the famous line of Jesus that says, “Father, into you hands I commend my spirit.” The word commend means to entrust for care or preservation. We should not only trust God with our lives, but trust God with our souls. If we spend our lives making our souls more and more beautiful, we will be able to present our beautiful soul to God when we die. While our souls will rarely be perfectly clean, we should try to keep them as clean as possible and presentable to God. By staying close to the light of the Father, our souls will also be illumined and we will be able to shine brighter for others. Let us keep listening to God and trusting Him and remember to always keep our little light shining.
