The Canaanite woman says, “Please, Lord, for even the dogs eat the scraps of their masters.” This reminds me of the story of the prodigal son. The prodigal son says, “How many hired servants of my father’s have enough bread and bread to spare, and I perish with hunger”. Both the woman and the son are living in sin. They are doing what they want to do, but they each realize that they aren’t happy in their current situation.
Are we truly happy when we give in to our own pleasures and do we want to do? I can attest that the times I have done what I wanted to do instead of what I should have done been some of the most unhappy moments in my life. The world’s solution to happiness leads to people falling into an unfulfilled pit of sadness and despair. St. Faustina mentioned seeing in her vision of hell, souls following a road with all sorts of pleasures and enjoying themselves along the way. At the end of the road was a precipice and souls were falling blindly into it. The number of souls was so great that she couldn’t count them. Ok…so that was a bit of a downer, but here is an upside.
When we realize that the only thing that will make us truly happy is to unite ourselves with God, then we will be embraced with a love that nourishes our soul. Our souls long for God. It’s in our soul’s “DNA” for lack of a better term. Are we following the path to God or the path to pleasure? Are we saying your will or my will be done. When our time is up, God will tell us, “Let it be done as you wish.”
