Led By the Spirit for Forty Days

What does our relationship with God look like right now? Are we closer to our family, friends, and loved ones than we are to God? Do we find more joy in the things of the world than in the love and freedom Jesus has given us? As we journey through Lent, let’s invite the Holy Spirit to guide us into a deeper relationship with our Father.

Jesus said, “One does not live on bread alone.” So, what do we hunger for in life? Do we seek satisfaction in food, entertainment, or money? Only God can provide lasting fulfillment. Everything else leaves us wanting more. Let’s shift our focus and allow Jesus to be the source of our satisfaction.

When Satan tempted Jesus with all the power in the world, it almost seems absurd—Jesus already has all the power. Yet on earth, Satan has the ability to offer power, wealth, and pleasure. Many have pursued these things, even placing their trust in Satan, but everything he offers eventually fades, leaving us empty. He is the master of lies, trying to convince us we can find happiness on our own, without God. In a way, he’s right—temporary happiness is possible without God. But lasting joy only comes when we trust in Him.

Let’s also resist the urge to test God. How often have we prayed, “If You’re real, give me a sign” or bargained, “If You do this for me, I’ll do that for You”? Faith isn’t about making deals; it’s about trusting in God’s perfect timing. Asking for His help is good, but we shouldn’t delay doing good works until we get what we want. I’ve seen videos of people handling venomous snakes, claiming God will protect them. But just as I wouldn’t want my child to run into traffic assuming I’ll always save them, God doesn’t want us to put ourselves in danger. When we test Him, we weaken our trust and put our relationship with Him at risk.

As we walk through this season of Lent, let’s allow the Holy Spirit to lead us. The closer we grow to Jesus, the closer we will be to Him in Heaven. Fasting and sacrifice may make Lent feel long, but when Easter arrives, we’ll rejoice in how much we’ve grown.
