One thing that I love to do is plant various flowers and bushes in my yard to make it look more beautiful. It’s not always easy to get things to grow. I have to water them regularly and make sure they get enough light. I also have to keep the weeds out of the garden or they will detract from their beauty. Our faith can be just like a garden that we need to take care of in order to grow.
Does our faith seem to not be growing? Maybe we aren’t getting enough light in our life. One of the best places to get light in our life is by attending church and especially by attending the Catholic Mass. Jesus comes to us in bodily form through the Mass and invites us to receive Him. When we receive the light of the world into our body, it nourishes our soul and changes us for the better over time.
Some people are attending Mass regularly, but the weeds around them are choking the life out of them. People may be in a bad relationship at home or have a job that is draining their energy. I can feel so busy at times that I find it hard to prioritize time for my faith. There is so much noise out there that can distract us as well. Television, movies, and social media constantly promote bad morals and try to make sinful things seem good and perfectly normal. The media inserts their own opinion in the news and pushes the ideologies that they want pushed. A lot of people get turned off by the Catholic Church telling them what is right and wrong. Well, the world is telling them their version of what’s right and wrong as well. Do we listen to the Word of God or do we listen to politicians, celebrities, and people with influence? It’s interesting how weeds have no trouble growing, but flowers do. This is true in the war of good vs evil. The evil of the world seems to have no trouble gaining strength and power while the good often struggle to grow.
Plants also need good roots to survive and thrive. While regular watering can promote root growth, watering too little can lead to the plant withering. Our faith needs good roots as well because when times get tough, we need to be able to weather the drought. Prayer, praise, reflection, and participating in the Sacraments are all some things we can do to deepen our roots. If our roots are too shallow, our faith may get damaged or die when times get tough.
Jesus plants the seed of faith within each of us. It’s up to us to take care of that seed and give it the best chance to grow. Don’t let the weeds overwhelm our life. Consistently clear out the weeds in your life and it will make your job easier in the long run. Stay in the light and continue to water your faith, especially during dry times. If we watch over and nourish our faith, we will be able to present Jesus with our beautiful flower when we reach the end of our life.
