When Jesus appeared to His disciples, they were frightened and thought He was a ghost. Jesus had to jump through hoops to prove that He was actually there in body and soul. He showed them His hands and feet and even ate something in front of them. He then recited the scripture detailing how the Son of Man had to suffer, die, and rise on the third day. How many times do we too have a difficult time believing?
There are many times we will say, “I’ll believe it when I see it”. There are some things that are so incredible and amazing that we have a hard time processing them. Just the fact that there is a God who always existed and never had a beginning is difficult to grasp. Even all of us will exist for an infinite amount of time. The infinite is a hard concept to grasp.
Jesus’s mercy is also hard to grasp. We seem to sin against God over and over and yet He constantly forgives us. We all have a bit of the pride of Adam and Eve in us. We are very important and special, but only because God created is in His image. Knowing that we are special isn’t the problem. The problem is when we think we are gods and believe we don’t need God in our lives. Without God, we are only a tiny insignificant speck in the universe. Without God we’ll never achieve the joy and satisfaction that we’ll achieve if we stick with God.
This past Sunday was Divine Mercy Sunday and we are taught to say, “Jesus, I trust in You”. We may never understand completely everything in this life. How does the bread and wine become the body and blood of Jesus? What is the trinity? How did God create the universe? We try our best at explaining these mysteries, but we don’t have a perfect understanding of them.
We don’t have to know everything or understand everything to love God. We should know that He wants what’s best for us. He came into the world to show us the way to Him. When we reach Him in the next life, we’ll understand everything, but for now we just need to follow His teachings and the teachings of the Church that He left behind for us. If we follow Jesus’ way, we are guaranteed to succeed, but if we go our own way and only follow some of His teachings, then there is no guarantee of success. Jesus, I adore You. Jesus, I love You. Jesus, I trust in You.
